Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan

Featured Film: Kwaidan

Director: Masaki Kobayashi

Edition Discussed: Eureka! Masters of Cinema Region 2 DVD

This is a historic day. Not for you probably but for me certainly. I now own the 183 mins runtime (damn near definitive) Eureka! The Masters Of Cinema Series Spine #29 Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan (imported straight from the UK; like that matters in this global economy) Region 2 DVD! (suck it 161 mins runtime Criterion Collection Region 1 DVD; just kidding I secretly still love you along with many other Criterion releases) Only a handful of DVDs pass the test to become part of my permanent collection and this one certainly does.

This edition and the actual film is Winning!

The DVD: It does have a more cinematic feel about it than other releases.  Pleasant small audio pops with what seems to be colors that reflect the original theater release more than the boosted contrast glossy Criterion edition set this DVD apart experience wise.  The inclusion of about 20 more minutes of content than other great releases make this the edition to own.  Even though I still have a soft spot for the Criterion release (it offers a different experience with colors and feel to me) and I will hold onto it for a while longer.

This film must be seen.  Plus all four stories are based on Lafcadio Hearn's tales (that man had tiger's blood in his veins).  Check out Hearn's books "Kwaidan", "In Ghostly Japan", "Kotto", and more if you like this movie.
